Product Manager, maker, designer, wannabe artist, occasional entrepreneur, tech enthusiast, unapologetic geek, and dad of two. I like to think of myself in terms of the current projects I am working on and not the titles I (or someone else) may have applied to me.
A visual design, appraisal, and entrepreneurship background is what originally lead me to product and it was a perfect fit for my skillsets and interests. The ability to view large data sets and understand the story they are telling has been key when building out roadmaps and being able to tell, and defend, that story to get buy-in from multiple stakeholders (skills I learned when appraising real estate in one of the most challenging markets in recent history). I enjoy applying these skills to my current role in product, but now in an industry and with teams more aligned to my interests and passion for technology, customer experience, and visual design. This experience also helps tremendously when creating documentation for a wide range of audiences that sometimes has to explain very complex problems, systems, or analysis. Measuring impact and making decisions are some of the most important parts of my job, and while challenging it is something I enjoy. My experience in product management includes successfully shipping an enterprise learning solution code update from Bootstrap to Material/Angular, using existing API’s to deliver a mobile experience for parents, designing and managing the delivery of a digital content publishing solution, and managing the feature backlog in order to keep customers and partners successful and attractive to the market while increasing new customer licensing and relationships. My role also included account management with our largest partner in order to ensure their success from an in-house system to an integrated solution in which we play a key and central part. I view being a product manager as “an internal CEO but without the authority” and I thrive with that level of autonomy and collaboration. Being able to research and discover customer insights and market trends, determining ways to address the needs and problems of those areas, and work with highly talented development teams to deliver those solutions is a role I am good at. I also have the experience and interpersonal communication skills to pivot when wrong, learn from failures, and maintain cadence and progress across technical, business, creative, support, and marketing teams.
I love playing board games with my kids, helping them figure out technology, having them show me even newer technology, and always being in a state of creating and making art. That includes design, sculpture, music, or whatever we have our hands into at any given time. Raising two creative and strong willed kids definitely keeps me on my toes, but the learning and teaching experiences are part of what keeps life interesting. I’ve recently also been diving headfirst into photography and social media/branding thanks to the inspiration of my incredible partner @janellez who teaches me something new every time we get together to be creative.
